When NECRA (the New England Comic Retailer Alliance) invited me to a signing tour of five stores in NE on the weekend of the release of ANGEL & FAITH #1 (9/3-9/4) and asked me to do an exclusive variant cover for the event, I happily obliged. I showed three sketches to my editors, and honestly I didn't expect this one to get picked. It was my personal favorite, but I thought it might be too silly and/or polarizing. Luckily they and the tour organizers dug it. I should state for the record that I'm mostly a Red Sox fan by association (Jon is from Boston and religiously follows the Sox/Pats/Bruins) BUT having spent a bit of time in Boston and having lived in NYC for 3.5 years, the intense rivalry between the two cities and their sports teams is a never-ending source of fascination for me. </i>(Side note: this was released to the general public online recently and I saw a few bewildered comments from fans abroad as to whattheheckthiswasallabout; here's a great wikipedia article on the rivalry - [link])</i>.
The spray paint can and graffiti were something I thought of in the pencils stage -- I searched around for anti-Red Sox t-shirt slogans and "Redsux Nation" was by far the most hilarious and appropriate, considering who would be graffiti-ing it.
Fans have probably already heard that the series will be set in London -- this cover is set in Boston (New England's got quite a few cobblestones in common with its namesake) and is simply for-fun. It doesn't play into the events of the series in any way.
This cover will have a limited print run of only 200 copies, available at the 5 stores that are part of the signing tour:
Saturday September 3rd:
Double Midnight Comics 11-1 Chris's Cards & Comics in Seabrook, NH 2-4 Jetpack Comics in Rochester, NH 5-7
Sunday September 4th:
Larrys Comics in Lowell MA 12-2 Friendly Neighborhood Comics in Bellingham, MA 3-5
GO SOX! Rebeka, I absolutely love your work, but this will hold a special place in my heart. It's four of my favorite things ever all in one. Comics, Angel, Faith, and Red Sox. BOOM.
Love this so much. I'm Yankees (also by association), but Faith's Boston origin and Angel following her lead makes this as natural as can be. And they're so smug! Sad your tour won't make it to Connecticut, but at least we all get to see this hilarious poster.
